Cheap Ecommerce Website Builder: Fees That Decide the Real Price
Every store pays card processing, which is roughly the same everywhere. The difference between cheap and expensive store plans is the extra transaction fee some entry plans add.
Three kinds of fee, only one of which you can avoid
- Plan price: the monthly subscription. Commerce tiers of builders typically cost $27–49 a month billed yearly.
- Card processing: what the payment processor charges per order, typically around 2.9% + $0.30 for online cards. Almost every route pays this.
- Transaction fee: an extra percentage some builders add on lower tiers, commonly 1–2% (sometimes only if you use an outside payment provider). This is the fee that decides which plan is cheapest.
Total monthly cost at three sales levels
Assumptions: $50 average order, card processing 2.9% + $0.30. Commerce plan at $39 with no transaction fee; entry store plan at $29 with a 2% transaction fee; WooCommerce on shared hosting at the $11 renewal rate plus about $12.50 a month in extensions (managed hosting at $30 for the $10,000 row).
| Monthly sales | Orders | Card processing | Commerce plan, no fee | Entry plan + 2% | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | 10 | $17.50 | $56.50 | $56.50 | $41.00 |
| $2,000 | 40 | $70.00 | $109.00 | $139.00 | $93.50 |
| $10,000 | 200 | $350.00 | $389.00 | $579.00 | $392.50 |
The entry plan and the commerce plan cost the same at exactly $500 a month in sales: the $10 plan difference equals 2% of $500. Below that, the entry plan is cheaper; above it, every extra $1,000 in sales costs you $20 more on the entry plan. At $10,000 a month the entry plan is $190 a month more expensive than the plan that looked $10 dearer.
WooCommerce is cheapest in cash at low and medium volume, but it's the route with the most work: updates, payment plugin settings, tax rules and backups are yours. At high volume it needs better hosting, and the gap closes.
Store launch checklist
- Pick a plan by your expected monthly sales in month six, not month one.
- Connect the payment provider and run a real test order with a real card, then refund it.
- Set shipping zones and rates; check what a customer in a far zone sees at checkout.
- Set up sales tax or VAT collection for the places you're required to.
- Write the pages stores need: shipping, returns, privacy, terms and contact.
- Compress product images (around 1200–1600 px, under 300 KB each).
- Add product structured data. Most builders and WooCommerce do this automatically; check with a rich results test.
- Turn on order notification emails and confirm they don't land in spam; see email setup.
Costs people forget
| Item | Typical cost | Needed when |
|---|---|---|
| Reviews app | $0–15/month | Almost always, for trust |
| Subscriptions / recurring billing | $10–25/month or a higher tier | Selling refills, memberships, boxes |
| Premium theme | $0–350 one-time | Only if free themes don't fit the catalogue |
| Shipping label app | $0–20/month | Physical goods beyond a few orders a week |
| Chargebacks | $15–25 each | Disputed card payments |
Common mistakes
- Choosing the cheapest plan and forgetting the transaction fee. Run the $500 break-even check above.
- Using a non-commerce plan with a "buy button" add-on and then rebuilding when the catalogue grows.
- Launching without a returns policy page. Payment providers and ad platforms may ask for one.
- Comparing plans without card processing. It's usually the biggest line, so include it to see the true margin.

FAQ
What is the cheapest way to start an online store?
Under about $500 a month in sales, an entry store plan with a small transaction fee, or WooCommerce on shared hosting if you're comfortable with WordPress. Above that, plans without a transaction fee win.
Do I need a separate payment processor?
Most builders include one. Using an outside processor is often possible but some builders charge an extra fee when you do.
Are there costs besides the plan and fees?
Yes: paid apps for reviews or subscriptions, a premium theme, shipping labels and, in many places, sales tax registration. Budget around $10–30 a month for apps.
